HIT news (School of Architecture Text/Picture) I have a new understanding on the characteristics of timber architecture through this competition. Meanwhile, the basic theories and subject knowledge that I have learned are also well used in practice. October 7th, the “2018 Third National Colleges and Universities Wood Structure Design Invitational Q&A Final” was held at the school.

After the sections of presentation, question and answer, and expert review, the students from Tongji University won the first prize for the work “Living under the sky”, and the works of HIT students: “Ribbon&Cone” and “Island· Sea· Build· Bridge· Gate” won the second prize. The teams from Southeast University, South China University of Technology, Beijing Forestry University, Harbin Institute of Technology and other universities won the third prize.

The timber architecture has brilliant achievements in the history of the Chinese nation. The timber roofed palace building with full of charm has become one of the typical symbols of oriental culture. Nowadays, many performance advantages of timber architecture have attracted more and more attention. The integration and cooperation of major in architecture and structure has become an important topic in the current education of timber architecture. For this purpose, in 2016, the National Institute of Civil Engineering Discipline Steering Committee Wood Structure Teaching Research Branch of the National College of Higher Education has initiated the “National Colleges and Universities Wood Structure Design Invitational Tournament”.

The competition was hosted by the School of Architecture of HIT. With the theme of “Gate”, the timber architecture was built as the entrance of scenic spot in conjunction with the function of tourist center of the tourist area, which required the coordination of the architecture with the natural and cultural features of the scenic spot, thus expressing the natural, ecological and cultural sense of the architecture through the wood structure features such as the wood properties, timberwork, and structure technology. More than 20 student works from 12 universities including HIT, Tongji University, South China University of Technology, Northeast Forestry University, Beijing Forestry University, and Taiwan University of Science and Technology have been sent to the competition, 8 of which were shortlisted for the final.
